John Amaechi OBE is a respected organisational psychologist, best-selling New York Times author, sought after public speaker, executive coach and Founder of APS Intelligence. He is a non-executive director of a £2.4bn healthcare organisation, in addition to being a board advisor for several FTSE100 organisations in the financial, legal and professional services, technology, publishing, engineering and retail sectors. In 2019, John was recognised as one of HR’s most influential thinkers by HR Magazine. John is the first Briton to have a career in the NBA.

John is a Chartered Scientist, a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health. He is a Research Fellow at the University of East London and his research interests are effective, inclusive leadership, building high-performing teams and organisational design that maximises productivity and human thriving in readiness for the future world of work.

John leads a team of psychologists, behavioural scientists and experienced business strategists that design and deliver evidence-based advisory interventions to service clients with people challenges that impact organisational performance.

Debra Dunn is SVP, General Manager, Property at USAA. Prior to this role, Debra was the Senior Vice President, Senior Financial Officer for P&Cs Insurance group where she leads a team of professionals responsible for financial performance planning and forecasting reporting and analysis including by company, by product, by state analysis; Loss Reserving and CAT financial reporting; and P&C Rating agency support.

Debra has had many experiences at USAA in various leadership positions in CFO including leading professionals supporting Staff Agency CoSAs, Rating Agency relationship management, the Financial Development Program within CFO, Enterprise Stress testing, development of Integrating Planning and Forecasting (IPF), supporting the IMCO, NMS and FPS organizations as well as Treasurer to the USAA Mutual Fund Board from June 2005 to February 2008. She has also served as Vice President of Enterprise Underwriting & Pricing.

Before joining USAA in 1998, Debra was in public accounting with Price Waterhouse in San Antonio where she supported various industries including investments and financial services companies. She is a 1996 graduate of the University of Texas San Antonio after transferring from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She is a certified public accountant and a licensed Series 27 Financial & Operations Principal.

Debra is married to Brian and has a daughter, Elizabeth, and a stepson, Cory. Their family enjoys downhill skiing and spending time with family and friends.

A former commissioned officer in the US Naval Reserve, Anne Marie Elder knows how to navigate through the depths of ocean marine insurance. She has more than 30 years of property, inland and ocean marine underwriting experience and currently serves as AXA XL’s Global Chief Underwriting Officer of Marine insurance. The overriding goal is the execution of our target operating model in collaboration with each region. In this role, she oversees AXA XL’s global marine strategy focused on how the marine industry’s top risks and trends may impact AXA XL and its brokers and clients.

Previously, Anne Marie served as head of AXA XL’s North America Marine business, where she expanded the company’s footprint in key markets, diversified its portfolio, advocated for greater utilization of AI and data analytics, and improved efficiency across the board.

In addition to her underwriting management duties at AXA XL, Anne Marie also serves on the Boards of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters and the Water Quality Insurance Syndicate.  She is a member of the ISO Emerging Issues Panel, the American Bureau of Shipping and the National Cargo Bureau.  She is a past board member and the Inland Marine Underwriters Association’s (IMUA) and the IMUA New England Advisory Committee, where she was named as Committee Person of the Year in 2014. Anne Marie was Named an Elite Woman in Insurance in 2016 by Insurance Business America. She also holds the Associate in Marine Insurance Management (AMIM) designation.

Anne Marie is also very passionate about Inclusion and Diversity issues and has been a mentor and proponent of AXA XL’s Business Resource Groups, including its PRIDE BRG in support of LGBTQ+ colleagues.

Trevor Gandy is the Managing Director, Talent, Diversity and Inclusion at Markel Corporation. He previously served as Principal, Diversity & Inclusion at Amazon. Prior to that he was the Senior Vice President, Deputy Chief Culture Officer at Chubb Insurance. Prior to ACE’s acquisition of Chubb in January 2016, Mr. Gandy was Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer for Chubb.

Mr. Gandy received his Bachelor’s degree from Pepperdine University and has completed an Executive Education Program for Senior Human Resources Executives at Stanford University. He further completed the Human Resources Leadership Academy development program sponsored by the Corporate Executive Board and Boston College Carroll School of Management Corporate Responsibility Management program.

She created the Disability Answer Desk, which provides specialist customer support to people with disabilities(over 1M calls handled to date),hosts the annual Microsoft Ability Summit, which focuses on empowering2000+attendees with the inclusive and innovative thinking necessary to enable people around the world.Instrumental in projects such as Autism Hiring Program, Sound scape and the Microsoft Ability Hackathon, which has supported over 500 hackathon teams building technology for people with disabilities. Dr. Leroy (Lee) David Nunery II is an accomplished executive and multigenerational entrepreneur with a unique breadth of experiences in corporate banking, capital markets, education, professional sports, and a family-owned electrical contracting firm, Leroy Nunery & Sons, Inc. In 2007, Dr. Nunery founded PlūsUltré LLC, a strategic advisory firm that focuses on turnarounds, transformations, growth and innovation planning, resource development, talent development, governance training, and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategies. Since its founding, PlūsUltré has successfully served educational, commercial, governmental, entrepreneurial, and nonprofit associations around the country.

In 2017, Dr. Nunery was commissioned by Marsh Companies to author a groundbreaking demographic and psychographic study called “The Journey of African American Insurance Professionals: Past and Present”, which analyzed the industry’s DEI dynamics and the historic accomplishments of African American practitioners, professionals, and insurance companies. Since publication, Dr. Nunery’s research has been presented in multiple forums and platforms, receiving national acclaim from audiences at all levels across the industry. Dr. Nunery is actively engaged as a strategic consultant industry-leading carriers, reinsurance companies, independent agencies, and trade associations to effectuate organizational cultural change by transforming their capacities to identify, select, and retain diverse talent. Dr. Nunery is also advising major insurance industry organizations on the development and implementation of DEI initiatives, including Executive Diversity Consultant to the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers Association (IIABA); Senior Advisor for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion to the Million Women Mentors’ Women in Insurance Initiative; Non-Resident Scholar for the Insurance Industry Institute (III); and DEI Research Consultant for the American Property and Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA). Because of the impact of his deep engagement with the industry, Dr. Nunery has been recognized by several organizations, including Insurance Business America’s “Leading The Change” (September 2020). He is developing proposals to extend The Journey Study to explore the linkages between effective diversity and inclusion practices and corporate performance and the impact and efficacy of supplier diversity and economic inclusion programs.

Dr. Nunery has extensive experience in governance, spanning forty years. He currently serves on the boards of Benchmark School, Philadelphia Outward Bound School, and the National Council of Washington University’s Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement. He has previously served on the boards of Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Inc., Pitney Bowes, Inc., Savoy Bank (New York), and Lafayette College. He is a Lifetime Member of the National Black MBA Association, Inc., and served as National President (1983 - 1987). Among other recognitions, Dr. Nunery has been awarded the Wallace L. Jones Lifetime Achievement Award by the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, and the Alumni Achievement and Community Engagement Award from Washington University’s Gephardt Institute. Since 2002, Lafayette College has awarded the Leroy D. Nunery Award for Intellectual Citizenship to a senior student of color for leadership and academic excellence.

Dr. Nunery is a graduate of Lafayette College (B.A., Honors in History, 1977), Washington University (M.B.A., 1979), and the University of Pennsylvania (Ed.D., 2003). He has participated in the Aspen Institute’s Executive Seminar; the Public Education Leadership Program (Harvard); and the Wharton e-Fellows Program (University of Pennsylvania). He has lectured on educational access, leadership, and organizational development and taught at The Fels Institute of Government, University of Pennsylvania (2008 – 2015) and Keller Graduate School of Management (1981 – 1984) as an adjunct faculty member.

Prior to joining Swiss Re, Stefanie Ott was CRO and a member of the Executive Committee of Generali in Switzerland. She started with Generali in 2014 leading the Internal Audit function. Prior to joining Generali, she spent over 16 years with Deloitte in audit and consulting in the US,UK and Switzerland.

Scott M. Purviance is the chief executive officer of Amwins, the largest independent wholesale distributor of specialty insurance products in the United States. Based in Charlotte, N.C., the company operates through more than 118 offices globally and handles premium placements in excess of $20 billion dollars annually.

One of the company’s first employees, Scott joined Amwins in July 2001 as chief financial officer and took on the additional role of chief operating officer in April 2012. He became chief executive officer on May 1, 2018. Scott has served on Amwins’ Board of Directors since April 2015.

Prior to joining Amwins in 2001, Purviance served as Vice President of Finance for the Business Insurance Division of Royal & SunAlliance USA, Inc. (1999-2001) and was in the insurance services assurance practice with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP (1992-1999).

He holds a Bachelor of Accounting from Wake Forest University and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer’s Association for six years.

Neal Rideout is the SVP, GM of P&C Distribution & Service at USAA. In this role, Neal leads the teams responsible for all sales and service (non-Claims) member interactions across all channels (phone, digital, chat and paper).

Neal's team spans five key areas: The P&C Digital team is focused on creating a holistic digital experience that embodies great USAA service across mobile and dotcom. The Insurance Sales and Service team including internal and 3P Insurance Professionals provide member care to new and existing members in the phone channel. The team of Experience Owners and Business Process Consultants are accountable for experience design and optimization across all channels. Neal's Sales and Service Performance team is accountable for key performance metrics versus plan. The final area is the Operations and Planning team that manages the agile and non-IT portfolio of work to run and change the business.

Prior to this role, Neal led the Auto Insurance Experience function. In previous roles, he led Enterprise Client Management, Bank Client Management, and the Enterprise Client Management function.

Before joining USAA in 2012, Neal was Vice President for Red Ventures and was responsible for direct marketing and sales driving online demand generation and offline call center sales. Prior to Red Ventures, Neal served as Senior Vice President of Digital Marketing for Bank of America. There he was responsible for digital marketing of all card, deposits, home loans, integrated, and enterprise programs. Prior to Bank of America, Neal spent seven years with General Electric (GE) in sales and marketing roles, the last being Marketing Lead overseeing all marketing and site design for the eBay/PayPal credit portfolio.

Neal holds a B.A. from Illinois Benedictine College as well as an MBA from the University of Chicago and is a GE Six Sigma Black Belt. Neal and his wife, Melissa, have three children, Ava, Lyle and Cole.

Howard Ross is lifelong social justice advocate, and is considered one of the world’s seminal thought leaders on identifying and addressing unconscious bias.  Howard has delivered programs in 47 states and over 40 other countries to audiences including Fortune 500 companies, colleges and universities, and major institutions within healthcare, government, and non-profit sectors. He authored the Washington Post best seller, Everyday Bias:  Identifying and Navigating Unconscious Judgments in Our Daily Lives, ReInventing Diversity: Transforming Organizational Community to Strengthen People, Purpose and Performance.  His latest book, Our Search for Belonging: How the Need for Connection Is Tearing Our Culture Apart, published by Berrett-Koehler in 2018, received the Nautilus Gold Medal for Social Change and Social Justice. The updated edition of Everyday Bias Identifying and Navigating Unconscious Judgments in Our Daily Lives was published in July 2020.

Isabelle contributes extensively to EY’s global thought leadership and writes regularly on topics impacting the insurance industry. She is frequently quoted in the media and makes regular presentations on the insurance industry to a variety of audiences.

Bio

Alvin B. Tillery, Jr. is Director of the Center for the Study of Diversity and Democracy and Associate Professor of political science at Northwestern University. He earned his Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University in 2001. In 1993, he graduated summa cum laude from Morehouse College with a degree in political science. Tillery’s research focuses on the relationship between politics and racial and ethnic inequalities in the United States, presidential leadership, and social movements. His book Between Homeland and Motherland: Africa, US Foreign Policy and Black Leadership in America (Cornell University Press, 2011) won the W.E.B. Du Bois Distinguished Book Award from the National Conference of Black Political Scientists in 2012. In 2015-2016, Tillery served as co-chair of the American Political Science Association’s Presidential Task Force on Racialand Class Inequalities in the Americas. He currently serves as implementation czar for the American Political Science Association’s Presidential Task Force on Gender Equity in the Profession. Tillery is a frequent commentator in the national media on diversity issues and presidential leadership. Tillery is also the principal of Analytic Insights Leadership and Diversity Consulting, LLC.

Werstak joined The Harford in July of 2004. She has served in numerous Product & Strategy roles over her 16+ year tenure.

Currently, Werstak leads the Group Benefits Small Business and Group Reinsurance Plus Businesses. 

Major responsibilities include oversight of the financial performance as well as accountability for strategy development and execution of key business priorities for these businesses.

Prior to joining The Hartford, Werstak worked at for Dickinson Brands Inc., a privately owned consumer products company, as a Marketing Communications and Sales Account Manager.

Werstak holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and a minor in Business Administration with a Marketing concentration from Eastern Connecticut State University.
